What About the Garden?

What about the garden, indeed?

The real question is, what garden?

Between the rain (so much rain this year, it actually broke a 96-year record) and us focusing on salvaging wood from the farmhouse all last month, the garden has been shamefully ignored.  The weeds took over the peas.  The rain and hail wiped out the onions.  Grass is growing thickly and luxuriously over every inch of ground.

The garlic is growing well though, as are the perennial asparagus, rhubarb and berries (marionberries, blueberries and raspberries).  Basically everything that was planted last year or in years before is doing great.  We’ve had to give up on the rest.  The weather has just been too awful, and we’ve been too preoccupied.

0411 fenceI’m still holding out hope that we have a summer garden this year.  I hope we can grow corn and beans and cucumbers and squash.  But truthfully, I just don’t know if we will.  If the ground dries out, we will till.  If that happens before the middle of June, we will plant.  Otherwise, we’ll just have to content ourselves with what is already growing and plan to be better prepared for next year.

I’m pretty sure there will be enough for us to do this summer though, without stressing too much about vegetables!

(These pictures, by the way, are apropos of nothing.  I’ve got no good garden shots.  But the top photos are our little seating area by the Port Orford cedar, where we have a nice view of the garden when it grows; and the bottom photo shows just some of the other things we have to take care of this summer, namely general clean up and blackberry eradication!)

Beautiful pictures! Last year, I ended up neglecting so much of our garden. We had a baby, and, well, other things were more important. We were able to raise and harvest as much as we could handle, but I was glad that we weren’t as on-task, because we wouldn’t have been able to deal with it all. I’m sure you’ll find the same, what with a new house going up and all. Good luck!
